Cayman Cricket has announced the appointment of the Cayman Islands’ first senior development officer for women and girls.
Sania Iqbal Khan, a former member of the Pakistan international women’s team will take responsibility for the development of women and girls’ cricket with immediate effect, with the aim of increasing the participation of women and girls in the game.
Sania’s appointment will see girls involved in the Cayman Islands Primary Schools Carnival tournament for the first time in its history. Her arrival will also see the development of a new women’s league and the development of a mother and daughter (MAD) cricket programme in Cayman.
The MAD programme will be one of many programmes implemented by Sania. This is part of an ICC initiative aimed at introducing women and girls to cricket. Participants fun, basic skills and fitness, as well as a platform for social interaction within a family and community atmosphere.
The programme consists of six sessions as follows:
Session 1: Introductory activities including knowledge sharing about the game, highlighting women players, Q&As etc.
Session 2 – 4: Basic skills training including throwing, catching, bowling, batting and fielding.
Sessions 5 & 6: Mini tournaments and adopt a team in the WWT20.
The sessions will take place indoors, at the Kings Sports Centre, starting Thursday 16th May to 20th June.
Participants will receive a free MAD T-shirt and there is no cost involved in taking part in this event.

In addition to Sania’s role with women and girls, she will also be central to our efforts to ramp-up the Cayman Islands’ youth cricket development programme, which is already underway in primary and secondary schools across the islands. The Cayman Cricket Association are confident that Sania’s experience, at the top level of cricket, will prove a great addition to the team of five cricket development coaches.
